Launch of the Competition 2024

We welcomed over 40 undergraduate students to the launch of the second Aegis Professor Undergraduate Competition held in the School of Geographical Sciences on 6 March. With pizza and drinks to kick-start the event, this was an opportunity for the students to find out more about the the competition and how to sign up.

We were thrilled to be joined by Aegis Professor Michael Cuthbert, Director of the National Quantum Computing Centre, who shared his career path from Physics graduate to Head of a major national science facility. Associate Professor Dave Jarman from the Centre of Innovation and Entrepreneurship spoke about why this is such a fantastic opportunity to be part of and the bespoke innovation training he and his team will be offering in June to all those who enrol.

Hearing from past participants and competition winners Weronika Stelmach and William Terry-Wright was particularly inspiring and we were excited to learn how their winning idea from 2023, focussed on overconsumption in the fashion industry, has developed into the start-up Weaving Change.

Both Weronika and myself thoroughly enjoyed attending the APUC launch event and it was great to have the opportunity to speak about our experience. The APUC was the start of a thrilling adventure for both of us and was the spark that led us to set up Weaving Change and develop Swerv. We are hoping to move forwards with user testing in the next month and general release will be in Q4 2024. More details are on our website www.weavingchange.co.uk
